Best in Show award winner Rebecca Kemble of West Des Moines, Honey Bee – Here Today, Gone Tomorrow, Fiber – Painted, Stitched

The following award winners were announced at the opening reception of Iowa Crafts: 47 at the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum on Saturday, November 1, at 2:30 p.m.  This statewide competition was open to all artists above high school age residing in the state of Iowa.  Forty-five artworks by thirty-four artists were selected for the final show.  Iowa Crafts: 47 can be viewed in the Museum’s Kinney-Lindstrom Gallery through December 31, 2025.  The juror for this competition was Laura Anderson, Programming Associate (Studio Art Instructor) at the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum.  

Rebecca Kemble, of Wes Des Moines, was given the Best in Show award for the painted fabric piece, Honey Bee – Here Today, Gone Tomorrow.  This award grants Kemble a solo exhibition in 2026 in the Museum’s Center Space Gallery.

The Best in Clay award of $150 was given to Sue Heemstra, of Des Moines, for Namaste.  The Juror’s Special Mention in Clay of $50 was awarded to Amanda Barr, of Waterloo, for the porcelain piece, Mourning the Futures That Should Have Been.

The Best in Fiber award of $150 was given to Rowen Schussheim-Anderson, of Davenport, for the tapestry, Ode to Hundertwasser.  The Juror’s Special Mention in Fiber of $50 was awarded to Janet Pittman, of West Des Moines, for Tilt-A-Whirl.

The Best in Glass award of $150 was given to Candida Deree, of Waterloo, for the fused glass piece, New Table Cloth.  The Juror’s Special Mention in Glass of $50 was given to Chris White, of Clear Lake, for the fused glass piece, Lakeside.  

The Best in Metal/Wood award of $150 was given to Robert Wallace, of Ames, for the small, wooden sculpture, Sixth Planet Spectacle.  The Juror’s Special Mention in Metal/Wood of $50 was given to Julienne Friday, of Forest City, for the wooden piece, Moon Rise.

The Best in Other Craft Media award of $150 was given to Sergiy Nagorny, of Oskaloosa, for CupHolderArt.  The Juror’s Special Mention in Other Craft Media of $50 was given to Judy Bales, of Fairfield, for the mixed media clothing, Flapper.

An Honorable Mention was presented to Jim Heemstra of Des Moines for his large glazed ceramic sculpture, Stacked Sculpture.

Iowa Crafts: 47 will be on display through noon on Wednesday, December 31.  Admission to the Museum is free.  Museum hours are – Tuesday and Thursday – 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Closed Sunday – Monday.  For more information please call the Museum at 641-421-3666.
